The enlarged bills of 
toucans and hornbills 
are ornate, pigmented, 
and used in mating 
displays, yet the two 
birds are not related. 
Toucans live in the 
American tropics; 
hornbills come from 
Africa. That similar 
birds, like toucans 
and hornbills, exist 
in different forests 
means that each is 
a product of its own 
environment.
